FLORIDA’S LARGEST LAW FIRMS ARE GETTING MORE SERIOUS ABOUT MARKETING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA — May 17, 2004 — Florida’s largest commercial law firms are more focused on marketing and business development than ever before, according to a recently released survey conducted by The Remsen Group, a law firm marketing consulting firm based in Fort Lauderdale.

The Remsen Group has just published its 2004 Law Firm Marketing Department Survey, which includes detailed information about the in-house marketing departments at 24 of the 27 commercial law firms in Florida with more than 50 attorneys. The participating firms represent over 6,200 lawyers and the average firm size is 288 lawyers.

The survey reveals that, on average, Florida’s largest commercial law firms now have one in-house marketing professional for every 40 lawyers and invest approximately 2-3% of gross revenue in marketing and business development. Law firm marketing is relatively a new phenomenon that began in earnest in 1977, when the controversial Bates v. State Bar of Arizona decision opened the way for law firm advertising.

“Smart law firms are starting to realize that they must run themselves more like a business and less like a fraternity if they want to survive and prosper in these increasingly competitive times,” asserts John Remsen, Jr., President of The Remsen Group. “They are also starting to figure out that effective marketing is an essential ingredient to running a successful and profitable business operation. It’s a trend that many lawyers hate to see, but it’s the reality of the marketplace,” says Remsen.
